A statistical measurement of a data set's dispersion (or variation in
distribution); it calculates the data spread in relation to the
population's mean. Standard deviation is the
most common method of measuring variation; often represented by the Greek
letter for "sigma," it is also one of the primary
components of the measurement system that forms the basis of
Six Sigma methodology.
