Snapshot Terminology:
Snapshot
. A snapshot contains the state of the virtual machine at a point in time.
Delta disks
. When a snapshot is created, a new disk is created that accumulates writes from the point of the snapshot. When further snapshots are taken, this new disk is also save and a new disk is created to accumulate writes. The disks created to accumulate writes are referred to as delta disks. The original disk (referred to as the base disk) contains the point-in-time copy of the VM prior to the snapshot operation.
Deleting a snapshot (or collapsing a snapshot)
.
When a snapshot is deleted, the changes accumulated in the delta disk are written to the base disk
vmsn file.
Contains a copy of the memory image if a snapshot is created while a virtual machine is powered on.
